The preterit

In Spanish, just as in English, the preterit (simple past) is used to describe situations that happen prior to the moment of utterance. Note that the simple past does not include the moment of utterance.

-To describe events that happened in the past.

El concierto acabó a la media noche.

-To anticipate an imminent event.

Con este autogol ya nos descalificaron del mundial.
